Please help me with my dry skin problem?

My face is not usually very dry, though some days it is very dry and the only thing to cure it was to rub off all the flaking skin. Recently my face has become drier more often and even if it doesn’t look dry, if i rub my skin a little you can see skin beginning to flake. I put lotion on and have been using the same one for many years so i do not think that is the problem. Anyone have any solutions/advice for preventing this or curing it?
